Running balance
Section titled “Running balance”The running balance is and remains a beta feature. The column shows the calculated balance directly after each transaction.
The calculation uses:
- Reference balance and reference date — a known balance on a specific date, configurable per account.
- Transactions — all credits and debits are added forwards and backwards from the reference point.
Why it stays beta
Section titled “Why it stays beta”The running balance cannot always be shown correctly per transaction, because source data from banks is not uniform. Some banks do not provide a timestamp for a transaction, or provide an inconsistent one. As a result, the exact order of transactions on the same day cannot always be determined. The running balance is therefore a calculation based on available data and is not a replacement for the current bank balance.
Dependent on bank data
Section titled “Dependent on bank data”If the bank provides a transaction time, the order can be determined more precisely. Without a time, the order of transactions on the same day may differ from the actual order.
Turning balance calculation on or off
Section titled “Turning balance calculation on or off”Balance calculation can be enabled or disabled via the Settings menu:
- Enabled — running balance is calculated and can be shown in the transaction list, transaction details and reports.
- Disabled — running balance is not recalculated on changes and is not shown anywhere.
Enabling Running balance in Column display automatically enables balance calculation.
Manually recalculating the balance
Section titled “Manually recalculating the balance”If transactions have been changed or re-imported, the running balance can be manually recalculated via the actions menu in the transactions screen.
Difference with bank balance
Section titled “Difference with bank balance”Banks provide transactions with a booking date — the date on which the transaction was administratively processed. The running balance is built on that booking date. Banks often show the transaction date (the moment of payment) in their own overview. A card payment on 31 December that is not booked until 1 January counts in the bank balance on 31 December, but falls on 1 January in Spendle. Over a longer period the balances align.
