Account settings
In Spendle various settings can be filled in per account. This article describes each field in the account detail screen and when to use it.
Basic details
Section titled “Basic details”Account number
Section titled “Account number”The unique identification number of the account. For bank accounts this is usually the IBAN. For manually created accounts Spendle generates a number automatically. Use the actual IBAN when importing transactions via CSV or PSD2 — Spendle links transactions automatically to the correct account based on this number.
The display name of the account — visible in lists, reports and charts. Examples: ING Current account, Holiday savings account, Credit card.
Account type
Section titled “Account type”The type determines how Spendle displays the account on the balance sheet.
Assets:
- Current account — everyday bank account.
- Savings account — savings.
- Cash — physical cash.
- Fixed assets — assets such as a house or car.
- Current assets — short-term assets.
- Liquid assets — immediately available funds.
Liabilities:
- Savings goal — a virtual debt to yourself for a savings goal. The balance grows as savings increase, until the goal is reached.
- Mortgage — home financing.
- Equity — total net worth.
- Long-term loan — loans > 1 year.
- Short-term loan — loans < 1 year.
Balance type
Section titled “Balance type”Determines whether the account is shown under Assets or Liabilities on the balance sheet. Usually set automatically based on the account type.
- Assets — positive balance = funds available.
- Liabilities — positive balance = money owed (displayed as negative).
Reference balance settings
Section titled “Reference balance settings”The reference balance is the reference point from which Spendle calculates all balances.
Reference date
Section titled “Reference date”The date on which the reference balance was established. Spendle calculates the current balance by adding all transactions after this date to the reference balance.
Choose a date in the past for which the balance is known to be correct — for example 31 December of last year or the date of the last bank statement.
Reference balance
Section titled “Reference balance”The balance on the reference date. Example: if the savings account had €5,000 on 31-12-2024, enter: Reference date 31-12-2024 and Reference balance 5000.00.
For PSD2 accounts a calculator button appears that allows the reference balance to be calculated or taken from the bank balance.
PSD2 settings
Section titled “PSD2 settings”These options are only visible for accounts with a PSD2 connection.
Auto update balance
Section titled “Auto update balance”When enabled, the reference balance is automatically overwritten with the current bank balance at every PSD2 sync. Advantage: the reference balance is always up to date. Disadvantage: the balance check cannot be used, because by definition there is never a discrepancy. Disable this if the balance check is needed.
Check balance on sync
Section titled “Check balance on sync”When enabled, Spendle checks after every PSD2 sync whether the calculated balance matches the bank balance. When enabled:
- Auto update balance is turned off.
- The reference balance is set to the calculated balance of 31 December of last year.
Click Check now to run a balance check immediately without waiting for the next sync. See Balance check.
Display
Section titled “Display”Colour
Section titled “Colour”The colour used to display the account in charts and lists. Click the colour swatch to change it.
Target balance
Section titled “Target balance”Optional amount to be reached. Examples: holiday savings account €3,000, emergency fund €10,000, mortgage €0 (fully repaid).
Show progress
Section titled “Show progress”Displays a progress bar towards the target balance. Useful for savings goals, loan repayment or savings accounts with a target.
Management
Section titled “Management”Disabled
Section titled “Disabled”Set an account to disabled when it is no longer actively used but the history should be kept. Disabled accounts are not shown by default, are not included in totals, and can be re-enabled later. All transactions and history are retained.
Actions
Section titled “Actions”Balance correction
Section titled “Balance correction”Creates a correction transaction to eliminate the difference between the calculated balance and the actual balance. Use this when a transaction can no longer be traced or when there is a small rounding difference.

Section titled “Select image”Choose a logo or image for the account:

- From the device — upload a custom image.
