Joint account

With a joint account into which both partners deposit money and from which household expenses are paid, there are two ways to record this correctly in the administration.

Example of transfers to and from the joint account

Transfers from a personal account to the joint account are not expenses but internal transfers. Only when spending actually occurs from the joint account are there real expenses.

To record this correctly, the transfers receive a category with Transfer checked. These transactions are excluded from all result overviews and reports, but remain visible in balance charts.

See Glossary — Internal transfers.

For more insight into the income and expenses on the joint account, netting can be applied. Part of the salary is then recorded as income on the joint account instead of as an internal transfer.

The personal account shows €100 salary remaining The joint account shows €100 salary received

Example:

€200 salary is received on the personal account, of which €100 is transferred to the joint account.

  • Personal account — €200 as Salary (received from employer), €100 as Salary (transferred to joint account).
  • Joint account — €100 as Salary (received from personal account).

Result:

  • Total income €200, split across both accounts.
  • Personal account shows €100 salary.
  • Joint account shows €100 salary.
