Budget per account

For more control, a budget rule can be linked to a specific account or to a profile (a group of accounts). The budget rule then applies exclusively to that account or profile.

Without an account or profile specified, a budget rule applies to the category as a whole, regardless of which account the expenses run through. When filtering on an account, the budget is automatically distributed proportionally across the active payment accounts. With two payment accounts, half the budget is shown per account. Credit accounts (loans, credit cards) are not included — the distribution applies only to payment and savings accounts.

Example: The category Groceries has a budget of €600 per month. This can be split:

  • Joint account: €400 per month
  • Personal account: €100 per month
  • Partner’s personal account: €100 per month

There are three ways to link a budget rule to accounts:

  1. Per account — create a separate budget rule per account.
  2. Manual distribution via profile — set percentages per account on a single budget rule. For example: 70% ING Current, 30% Rabo Current. In the budget overview this is indicated with a blue assignment icon.
  3. Dynamic distribution via profile — let Spendle automatically distribute the budget based on actual spending patterns. If 60% of groceries goes through account A and 40% through account B, the budget is distributed in the same ratio. Without transaction history the budget is distributed equally across the accounts in the profile.

Assignment percentage in the budget overview

Section titled “Assignment percentage in the budget overview”

When filtering on an account, the budget overview shows a column with the assignment percentage per category:

  • 100% — the budget rule was created specifically for this account. Shown in the standard text colour.
  • Calculated percentage — the budget is distributed automatically (equally or dynamically). Shown in a lighter colour, making it clear that this is a calculation rather than a fixed setting.

In the category details, a Calculation button is available under the budget tab. This opens an overview with:

  • The active account or profile being filtered on.
  • The budget method of the category.
  • All budget rules with per rule: the account or profile, the amount, the assignment percentage, the frequency and the period.
  • A monthly breakdown of budget, actual spent, to go and position.

The Write off button can be used to settle the remaining budget or position. The active account or profile is automatically taken from the filter.
